Walk your way to health

A few years ago, I was diagnosed with a lower back condition called Facet joint arthritis, meaning that I was in a lot of pain even after walking a few yards. Being overweight clearly wasn’t helping and I thought that was how life would continue. When I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and I started on my weight loss journey, I noticed I was starting to walk a little bit more each week. And so, I realised the health benefits that could be gained from incorporating walking into my life.

Although my spinal arthritis will never go away, neither will it improve if I lead a sedentary lifestyle so I try to do as much walking as I can until I know it is becoming painful again. My main source of exercise continues to be the gym, but my aim is to continuously improve my health, and I know that walking will help with this.

It’s not just my opinion either. Scientists and health advisors have constantly told us that walking is extremely beneficial for our health. The NHS site reminds us that “Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. Sometimes overlooked as a form of exercise, walking briskly can help you build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier. https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/walking-for-health/    The British Heart Foundation also says that walking regularly can help us enjoy a longer, healthier life, make our bodies feel better, can boost our energy and mood, help us get better sleep, keep our minds sharp and improve our immune system https://www.bhf.org.uk/informationsupport/heart-matters-magazine/activity/6-surprising-health-benefits-of-walking

So, even just a few minutes per day can be a great start and can set you on the path, no pun intended, of your walking journey. Again, with all my comments, please remember that this is just based on my experience, and it would always be best to contact your healthcare provider if you have any concerns about starting a fitness plan
